I was a bit disappointed with the selection and tactics for last night's game. It's easiest if I copy & paste some tweets I posted last night:
Not too happy with tonight's game. Not disappointed we lost - expected it - but why rest first-teamers? Is the league still the priority?!
Prasit, Pralong, Prompong all on the bench - all should've started. Looked like we were playing for a penalty shootout from the start.
The narrow midfield and packed defence of Korat suited Muangthong. Moreira made changes too late too. Prompong on at 75 was 15 mins too late.
Still, at least the team will be fresh for Saturday. Game was played at a snail's pace.
Problem with Korat's tactics is that once you concede a goal you've got nowhere to go.
Seen us described as "tenacious" elsewhere! Tenacity is precisely what we were lacking. Should've been hustling, harrying, snapping at MTU heels. Instead we sat deep & allowed them to dominate possession. Fatal error. We didn't receive 1 yellow - says it all. We should've been more physical.
As soon as I saw our line up last night – 15 minutes before kick off – I said to my better half "we've lost this match". I know we've got another match this Saturday, but we simply never gave ourselves a chance with our selction and tactics. We didn't have a recognised striker on the pitch until the 73rd minute.
The way we went about our task was as if it was a league game and we had come for a 0-0 draw. Fine, except it wasn't a league game, there's no second leg and no replay. The tactics can only be explained thus: either we were playing for extra time and penalties right from the start or the coach thought that victory for MTU was so likely that he just set us up for damage limitation - to keep the score down. Sitting back is fine if you're going to hit them on the break, but that didn't seem to be the game-plan either. We could have been more adventurous without compromising security at the back. The one occasion in the first half that we got wide and got a cross in, Bani hit the post.
The positives for me were the performances of second-choice goalkeeper Narong Wisetsri and recalled centre-back Thansit Tong-in (baldy number 34). I shuddered when I saw Narong striding out, but he put in his best performance in a Korat shirt and may keep first choice keeper Prasit out of the side this weekend.
I hoped in the preview in the website that Thanasit would be recalled and he didn't disappoint. He gave the ball away once or twice but more often than not he was in the right place at the right time 'putting out fires' at the back.
I don't want to get into personal criticism too much, but Jang Yong-Ik, Jagkree Burapha and Nikom Somwang shouldn't be in the team.
